Tell Nevada's Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) to divest!
PERS runs the 21 billion dollar pension fund for all of Nevada's Public employee's. Their current investment into most egregiously offending companies in Sudan (as listed by the Sudan Divestment Task Force) totals only 1.1 million dollars. That is only 0.06% of their total fund.
Even though this is less then 1% of their total investment, PERS still refuses to divest those funds.
22 other states have divested their public assets from companies operating in Sudan. States with far more to the 1% of their total fund at risk. It time for Nevada to join those against the genocide in Darfur. It is time for PERS to divest.
PERS cites "specific governing provisions". What governing provisions allow for the financial gain from the rape of women?
PERS cites "compliance with the Department of Treasury's Office of Foreign Asset Control". Does their compliance relieve them of their responsibility to ensure that they are not building retirement plans off genocide?
PERS cites "the appearance of no Safe Harbor for public fiduciaries such as themselves under the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act". Safe Harbor? PERS is worried about 0.06% of their total fund, the civilians in Darfur are worried about their lives.
Call PERS and tell a memeber of their executive staff that its time to divest from Sudan!
